A View from the Window is a series by Wataru Hatano, inspired by scenes encountered during his travels, memorable impressions of light, and the subtle landscapes he experiences in everyday life.
Awai emerged from a question that has become increasingly important in today's world, where information and values constantly intersect: What is truly essential?
Through this work, Hatano-san explores the notion of awai—an in-between, ambiguous space that exists between things—and seeks to create a place within the painting where one can quietly encounter oneself.
The work holds a contemplative openness, inviting viewers to pause and listen to their own senses and inner voice.
By intentionally avoiding recognizable motifs and embracing abstraction, Hatano-san leaves room for each viewer’s memories and emotions to surface and resonate within the work.
Like opening a new window to welcome light and air into a room, Awai brings a sense of spaciousness and depth to its surroundings, offering a quiet yet meaningful presence in everyday life.
